What is Nasal Capsular Contracture?
Nasal capsular contracture is a complication that may occur after rhinoplasty, particularly when artificial implants are used. It happens when scar tissue forms around the implant and gradually tightens, causing the nose to become distorted.
As the capsule of scar tissue contracts, it can pull the nasal tip upward, create an unnatural shape, and make the implant visible under the skin.
Capsular contracture can also make the nose feel firm, shortened, or deformed, often requiring revision surgery to restore both function and appearance.
Causes of Nasal Capsular Contracture
Capsular contracture usually develops due to scar tissue formation or repeated surgical intervention.
1. Inflammation After Rhinoplasty
Inflammation following surgery can lead to adhesion between tissues surrounding the implant. Over time, this may create a tight capsule of scar tissue that contracts and alters the shape of the nose.
2. Multiple Rhinoplasty Procedures
Patients who have undergone several nasal surgeries are more prone to contracture. Repeated procedures increase scar tissue formation, which can shorten the nose and cause structural deformities.
Who is a candidate?
- When the nose is upturned due to contracture
- When the upturned tip was extended unnaturally
- When the nose became short due to contracture
- When the implant looks deformed due to contracture
